NCT 127, you’ve done it again
this album, first of all, is a much newer and more experimental sound than some people might be used to. this is the concept of NCT: pushing boundaries, breaking rules, and setting standards. every album they release, both mini- and full-length, NCT 127’s sound is completely revamped. this time, they encompassed a LOT into We Are Superhuman.
having just finished the North American leg of their very first world tour, Highway to Heaven leads the listeners down an almost pseudo-memory lane. you feel nostalgic but uplifted, maybe thinking back to a time you might never have experienced yourself but can describe well. for me, this song feels like driving down the highway, windows down, 3am, screaming along.
this leads you to Superhuman, the title track. with lyrics encouraging you to be your own superhero and an upbeat sound, this isn't a song listen to while standing still. it has heavy techno aspects and a strong baseline but the melody carries it into something resembling what disco might sound like if produced in 2019. it’s distinctly new and futuristic while still having the ‘groove’ expected from NCT 127.
third up is FOOL, a song that can be described as lighthearted. the beat is reminiscent of wii music and hotel lobby but in a surprisingly refreshing way. the easy rapping and singing over it, complete with well-timed adlibs and harmonies, completely transform the music into a song perfect for a summer trip. this is the kind of music i would want playing over a montage of the best vacation of my life. around the 1:55 timestamp, Mark‘s line, “You’re a goddess, and I am a fool. What should I do?” brings the song to a point making it clear that this isn’t just another easy song. it’s definitely one to listen to on repeat.
the fourth song, Jet Lag, is probably my favorite on the album. it has a smooth jazz-esque undertone, light cymbals and snares, and just the right amount of synth piano. the vocals on this song are amazing, the harmonies are on point, and around 2:00, when Johnny and then Mark have their verses, it becomes apparent that every member in this group has notable talent in every role.
the fifth song is Paper Plane. if you thought FOOL was the song of the summer, give this one a listen next. it has the same feeling as a fun summer hit, it sounds like something you would blast during a high school teen movie driving montage, it has a distinctly different sound than the rest of the album, but all of the songs are incredibly diverse.
the sixth and final song, OUTRO: We Are NCT 127, is SO much fun to listen to. it’s dark, it’s techno, it’s definitely neo, and even without a chorus or verses, the way that all the members of the band ‘narrate’ it gave me chills the first few times i listened.
overall, this album is really impressive and one i’m glad to see put out by a band like NCT 127, and i look forward to their future work as well!!
